This popular local pub was sold by Punch Inns to a developer. The local landlords’ lease was not renewed and the pub abruptly closed. The developers applied to change the use of the building to residential flats with a lock-up bar. MPA and other locals objected to this closure and change of use. Camden Council refused this application and said the whole building should remain as a pub (including staff accommodation above the bar). The developers took no notice. They kept the pub closed, they started remodelling the inside of the building to make flats, they made the bar smaller…and then they appealed the Camden planning judgement. On 21st Feb there was a public hearing with a Planning Inspector. MPA’s representative spoke at the public hearing together with other local people. The Inspector found in our favour. The developers were told they had to keep the building as a pub.
The ground floor has just opened as an up-market cocktail bar and we wait to see if this becomes a suitable or a successful local venture. So far the regulars of the former Carpenters are not impressed.
