The former “old school house” next to Crowne Plaza (former Holiday Inn). This pleasant early Victorian building (not Listed but noted as a Camden “building of merit”) is within the Bloomsbury Conservation Area. It has been used as offices/workshops for years. A new owner wishes to develop it as residential housing, squeezing a large number of small flats into the space and asking for a raised mansard roof-line and a double-basement. MPA, together with Calthorpe Street Residents’ Association, have been contesting this development on the grounds that the proposed mansard roof will contravene Conservation guidelines, the proposed deep basement will affect the stability of the adjacent listed Georgian terrace, the new windows to the rear would cause lack of privacy to residents in Pakenham Street, etc etc. The list goes on and on. Camden refused this application. It appears to have gone to Appeal without any notification to objectors…..and now is back again with Camden with yet more concerns about the deep basement. MPA and CSRA will be attending yet another hearing in this case on June. Please send any comments you have on this appeal to Camden Planning by June 30th
